Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo: The PR1 Hike Guide

The PR1 (Vereda do Areeiro) is Madeira’s signature ridge walk: a trail along the island’s volcanic spine connecting Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m) to Pico Ruivo (1,862 m), the island’s highest point. It’s the section of stone staircases climbing the cliffs that earned the nickname “Stairway to Heaven.” It is also a trail that changed significantly in 2026, so plan with current rules rather than an old blog post. The 2026 Status — Read This First

After roughly two years of closure for reconstruction, the full PR1 between the peaks reopened in late April 2026. The rules are new and stricter than before:

• One-way only. The route is now officially walked in a single direction — Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo — not the old out-and-back.
• Limited days. As of June 2026 it is open to the public Friday to Sunday only, and closed Monday–Thursday for ongoing construction work.
• Mandatory booking + fee. Access must be reserved through the SIMplifica platform because of capacity limits, and the full route carries a fee of around €10.50 per person.

These rules change with weather and repair progress, so always confirm the current status when you book. A guided tour or operator handles the SIMplifica reservation and the day-of logistics for you.

Distance, Time & The One-Way Problem

The classic ridge from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is roughly 7 km one way along the spine, crossing Pico das Torres (1,851 m) in between. Because the trail is now one-way and you descend off the far end (typically toward Achada do Teixeira, the road access below Pico Ruivo), the full end-to-end day works out closer to 15–16 km and takes most hikers 7–8 hours including stops.

That one-way design creates the trail’s biggest logistical headache: you finish far from where you started. Self-drivers face an awkward two-car or taxi shuffle between the trailheads, which is the single best reason to let a transfer or guided tour handle it (more in our guided vs self-drive guide).

What the Trail Is Actually Like

This is a spectacular but genuinely demanding mountain walk:

• The tunnels. The route passes through several unlit rock tunnels carved into the cliffs (the longest around 150 m). A headtorch or phone flashlight is essential — bring one even for a daytime walk.
• The staircases. Long stone staircases climb and drop along the ridge; the start often involves a steep staircase descent before the climbing begins. It’s the “stairway” the nickname refers to.
• The exposure. Narrow ridge sections with big drops, fast-changing weather, and real altitude. Clear skies at the trailhead can turn to thick cloud and wind within half an hour.

How Hard Is It?

Rated moderate to hard. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you need a reasonable level of fitness, a head for heights on the exposed sections, and proper footwear for uneven volcanic stone. Continuous ascents and descents plus the staircases make it tiring; budget the full 7–8 hours and don’t underestimate it. Less confident walkers can still enjoy the sunrise viewpoint at Pico do Arieiro without committing to the whole crossing.

What to Bring

• Headtorch (tunnels + any pre-dawn start)
• Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support for the volcanic terrain
• Layers + windproof shell, gloves and a hat — the ridge is cold and windy even in summer
• At least 2 litres of water, sun protection, and a fully charged phone with offline maps
